THE 3 VITAL AREAS OF LEADERSHIP FOCUS

“In whatever field you are, at whatever level of leadership
– team leader, operational leader, or strategic leader –
there are three things that you should always be thinking
about: task, team, and individual.” - John Adair

Leadership guru John Adair has developed a simple and highly
useful model that has influenced the thinking and behaviour
of countless leaders.

The model describes three kinds of needs:

1.Task need
2.Team maintenance need
3.Individual need

These give three areas that a leader needs to constantly
focussing upon. These three areas overlap and interact.
Adair's model shows the areas as 3 overlapping concentric
circles.

The effective leader will consider and understand these
three areas of needs and ensure that these are built into
his or her approach.

It can be a useful exercise to consider what happens when
one area is not given sufficient focus:

Insufficient task focus – little is achieved

Insufficient team focus – team dynamics are poor

Insufficient individual focus – individuals may feel
de-motivated and under developed

The wise leader will ensure that all of these important
areas are consistently given attention.  When this is done
the individual involved are motivated and developed to
greater levels of performance. The team dynamics are
positive and the team delivers more than the individual
members could have delivered and the task is achieved and
perhaps even exceeded.

John Adair’s simple and yet profound leadership model
should be at the forefront of every modern leaders mind.
