ARE LEADERS BORN OR MADE?

A debate that is probably destined to continue forever is
whether leaders are born or made!

Recent research conducted by MORI on behalf of global
human resources consultancy DDI concluded that of 100
business leaders interviews 70% had been a school prefect,
and 50% had captained a sports team.  Is this evidence of
a natural tendency or inclination to be a leader? Perhaps.

Some of the best known leaders were not born into great
families or destined for leadership positions. They have
grown and developed into their leadership roles over time.

However there is other research that suggests that leaders
are created by the experiences that they have.  Management
guru Warren Bennis believes that the experiences people
have shape someone as a leader.

The oft repeated phrase “He’s a born leader” presupposes
that leadership ability is something that someone is born
with.  However to date no-one has been successful in
isolating a leadership gene!

If you take a pragmatic stand point, whether leaders are
born or made is of little relevance to you if you are now
in a leadership position!  What you need to focus on is
“how can you be the very best leader that you are capable
of being?”

No-one knows for certain if leaders are born or made. 
What is known for certain is that it is possible for
anyone to improve their skills and abilities as a leader.
That seems like a sensible thing for leaders or leaders –
to - be to focus their energy and attention upon.
